A new baby shop is opening in Plymouth City Centre – and all four employees are former Mothercare workers.
Caroline Sardu and her three staff members, Verity, Alana and Matteo were made redundant when the Mothercare store in Drake Circus closed and moved to Plympton.
With little baby shops in the city centre, Caroline decided to open her own business, Baby’roo and call on the help of her ex-colleagues.

Between them, they have more than 60 years experience in baby retail.
Baby’roo is on Armada Way and set to open on Monday, April 15.

It will also hold a range of mother and baby classes, pregnancy yoga and is in talks with the hospital about providing a weighing facility accessible for mum’s who don’t drive.
Caroline said that from her experience at Mothercare, she has realised that it is difficult to find a wide range of premature clothing and has a variety of stock at Baby’roo.
She said: “I don’t think we could ever rival [Mothercare], as we won’t sell the big ticket items like prams and furniture. But the young girls who don’t drive, have to get four buses to get to Plympton.
“I know from experience working at Mothercare that there wasn’t a big range of premature clothing so we will have a wider range.”
The name Baby’roo comes from “the close bond and nurturing that the Kangaroo is famous for”.

Verity Jewell, who works at the store, said: “We have a bright, light and fresh feel to the store with a true family feel. Giving advice and help to parents and of course our favourite part of our job seeing all those lovely little ones visiting.”
There are three private rooms in the store, where many activities and groups will be held, including; water babies, sling and swing, sing and sign, baby massage, and pregnancy yoga.
Caroline said that the staff “work really well together” and all “loved” their jobs at Mothercare.
She said: “We work really well together, we love working with the public.

“Having the private rooms means that we are able to do more stuff and provide a community hub.”
The shop will open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm.
The first 35 customers at the store at 10am tomorrow, will receive a goodie bag.
