BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A proposed bill is expected to hit the Senate floor this week would remove local and state taxes from feminine hygiene and baby products to help women, moms, and families save money.
There’s 25 different senators sponsoring Senate bill 62, including Senator Arthur Orr. He says this piece of legislation all comes down to helping people save a bit of money.
The bill would eliminate sales tax on certain baby supplies like diapers and formula, even maternity clothing and pumping equipment along with feminine hygiene products like tampons and pads.
Senator Orr says with half of our population having to bear an additional cost for something that happens naturally. He believes the government can help give some relief.
“If Alabama wants to be a pro-family state, and that’s certainly something we claim to be, it seems reasonable that you would help facilitate families that have the added expense of a baby, of a newborn and help them with that cost and encourage children and childbearing among young couples and help them with that,” he explained.
Senator Orr anticipates the bill will hit the Senate floor this week. If passed, it will then move to the House of Representatives.
